UCF cracks top 25 rankings for the first time since 2013

There was defensive coordinator Erik Chinander, who shimmied, and offensive coordinator Troy Walters, who shook, as members of the coaching staff joined UCF players by dancing away in celebration _ this time after dispatching Memphis 40-13 Saturday night at Spectrum Stadium.

UCF improved to 3-0 and before the weekend was out was ranked in the national top 25 polls for the first time since 2013.

The Knights landed at No. 25 in both the Associated Press and Amway coaches' top 25 polls released Sunday afternoon.

This is the third season the Knights have been ranked (2013, 2010).

UCF has appeared in the poll released weekly and after the national title game is played 11 previous times, most recently earning a top 10 ranking after defeating Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl in 2013.

Coach Scott Frost wasn't concerned about rankings in the moments following his team's win over the Tigers.

"I don't really care where they rank us. I could [not] care less," Frost said. "I told the team I want us to enjoy this win; [but after that,] we're flushing it. We're pretending these first three games never happened because we've got an eight-game season in front of us.

"If these guys play like they did tonight, we can accomplish whatever we want to accomplish."

UCF produced more than 600 yards of total offense in the win against Memphis _ a feat last accomplished against Temple on Nov. 16, 2013. The Knights also managed to rush for 350 yards in the game, the program's first 300-yard rushing game since Sept. 9, 2011, against Charleston Southern.

But as impressive as the victory was, the players themselves weren't concerned with the possibility of being ranked.

"We never worry about what's being talked about," said senior linebacker Shaquem Griffin, who finished with eight tackles, a sack and a forced fumble against the Tigers. "Our whole thing as a team, we just play ball. We played as a team on defense and offense. That's what we play _ all together. It's kind of hard to stop a team [that] plays as one."

McKenzie Milton, who was 19-of-31 passing for 253 yards and three touchdowns in the win, agreed.

"We don't have control over that _ that's you guys," he said. "Whatever happens, happens. We've just got to take it one game at a time. Like Shaquem said, we can't buy into the hype. You can't get too high or too low. You're only as good as your last game, so we've just got to keep working."

Kyle Gibson said the knights need to focus on what they can control.

"We are just taking it one game at a time," said Gibson, who finished with his second interception of the season as the Knights forced four turnovers on the night.
