Ubu Disco

Alfred Jarry's grotesque classic is being reinvented all over the Fringe this year, and it is clear that this story of a bid for world domination has a certain resonance in the current times.

Not that you would know it from this late night orgy of bad taste. It makes John Clancy's Ubu variation, Fatboy, over at the Assembly Rooms, look like a considered response to the US's penchant for invading small countries in the name of democracy. This, in comparison, is just a bit of fluffy fun.

Even fluffy fun, however, needs to be executed with some discipline. There is not much of that on show in this hour-long performance, which is merely irritating if you are stone cold sober but clearly gives its tanked-up audience some entertainment.

There are undoubtedly some good ideas and moments. Pa Ubu is an Elvis impersonator and Ma Ubu makes Lady Macbeth look like Mary Poppins, particularly in a karaoke version of Stand by Your Man. Otherwise it is blood and guts, bad taste and bad music, glove puppets and Pop Idol spoofs all available in one loud, gaudy package. Personally, I wouldn't buy, but if you want theatre after midnight on the fringe, you ain't got much choice.
