Ubisoft announces battle royale game which may compete with Warzone

Ubisoft has announced they're developing a battle royale game based on the Ghost Recon series.

During their live stream, which marked the 20th anniversary of the Ghost Recon series, they revealed details of what the battle royale title will feature.

Known as Ghost Recon Frontline, the game will be a free-to-play shooter, similar to other games in the genre such as Call of Duty: Warzone and Fortnite.

Devloped by Ubisoft Bucharest in collaboration with Ubisoft Belgrade, Ubisoft Craiova, Ubisoft Kyiv and Ubisoft Odesa it will support up to 100 players in team-based matches across a large-scale map with an open battleground.

The developers have stated it will also feature an "advanced class system" that enables players to freely customise their characters and upgrade abilities.

Abilities will be unique to each character's class and involve its own progression path - special abilities include deploying turrets, creating barricades and using smoke screens.

Players will not be shoehorned into dedicating their whole time to one particular class, being able to swap out their characters when they want to adapt to different combat situations.

The main battle royale mode in Frontline is called Expedition which sees 102 players compete in teams of three to complete objectives, gather intel and defend against enemies in order to escape the map - similar to Warzone's main battle royale mode.

Expedition seems to be the game's highest-octane mode with plenty of opportunities for teams to combat each other.

If that doesn't seem like your cup of tea, Frontline offers more "casual" modes - A representative from Ubisoft said a 'Control' mode will be available at launch, however, no details have yet been released on what it entails.

While no release date has yet been announced, the game will be available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC, Stadia, and Luna.
