Uber says it will offer 10 million free or discounted rides to people looking to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.
The rides include transportation to and from their destination for both the first and second doses.
A date for when the offer will begin rolling out hasn’t been set, according to Uber.
The ride-hailing app partnered with organizations dedicated to serving communities of color, including the National Urban League, the Morehouse School of Medicine and the National Action Network, to help target riders who could benefit most. And it plans to partner with other organizations in the future.
“We hope our technology can help make the largest-ever global immunization campaign a success and deliver the benefits of the vaccine quickly, effectively and equitably,” Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s chief executive officer, says.
In March, Uber offered 10 million free rides and deliveries to health workers and seniors as the pandemic surged. Lyft took similar measures in April, offering discounted rides to more than 200,000 health workers across the country throughout the month.
In Dec. 3, Uber sent a request to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asking to give drivers early access to the COVID-19 vaccine.
