Uber Eats is now offering free delivery on all convenience store orders

Uber Eats has scrapped delivery fees for people ordering from local convenience stores.

The offer is open until at least 24 April, and may be extended, letting people pick up a pint of milk, loaf of bread or even something alcoholic to drink and get it dropped to their doors.

Uber partnered with Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Walkers Crisps and Pepsi to cover the cost of delivery, so this doesn't come at the expense of any of its other actions to help out during the coronavirus lockdown.

Toussaint Wattinne, Uber Eats UK general manager, said: “We want to play our part and help people get the food they need delivered directly to their door during this difficult time.

"With over 600 convenience stores on Uber Eats, we hope that this free delivery will help people across the UK and are extremely grateful to our partners for their support.”

Other actions taken by the delivery firm include waiving the activation fee for all new restaurants and convenience stores signing up to the Uber Eats app and offering contactless delivery to protect customers and couriers.

Earlier this week Uber also said it would give away 200,000 free trips and 100,000 meals to NHS staff serving on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic.

The free rides and meals can be claimed by anyone with an NHS email address by signing up on Uber's website.

Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi hopes the free trips will be a "small way" to help the nurses, doctors and support staff of the NHS as they work "tirelessly" day and night.
