Uber drivers are logging off and staging a protest in Nottingham over pay

Uber drivers in Nottingham are due to stage a protest today, Wednesday, over what they say are large payouts to investors at a time when drivers' pay continues to be cut.

Hundreds of drivers are expected to log off the app in Nottingham, Birmingham, London and Glasgow today as part of an international protest.

UK drivers are expected to be off the app between 7am and 4pm.

The Nottingham protest will take place at Kind Edward Court, just off Huntingdon Street, in the city centre, at 1pm.

The United Private Hire Drivers (UPHD) branch of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), is calling for drivers to protest outside Uber's offices.

The branch is also asking the public to not to use the app to book Uber services during the times above.

It says the company's stock market flotation is going ahead while drivers' pay issues remain unresolved.

WGB UPHD branch secretary Yaseen Aslam said: "Since Uber arrived to the UK in 2012, it has progressively driven down pay and conditions in the minicab sector to the point where many drivers are now being pushed to work over 60 hours a week just to get by.

"Now, a handful of investors are expected to get filthy rich off the back of the exploitation of these drivers on poverty wages.

"We are protesting today demanding that the company pay drivers a decent wage and that government authorities tackle Uber's chronic unlawful behaviour.”

James Farrar, the branch chair added: “Uber's flotation is shaping up to be an unprecedented international orgy of greed as investors cash in on one of the most abusive business models ever to emerge from Silicon Valley.

"It is the drivers who have created this extraordinary wealth but they continue to be denied even the most basic workplace rights.

"We call on the public not to cross the digital picket line on 8 May but to stand in solidarity with impoverished drivers across the world who have made Uber so successful."

An Uber spokeswoman said: "Drivers are at the heart of our service - we can't succeed without them - and thousands of people come into work at Uber every day focused on how to make their experience better, on and off the road.

"Whether it's being able to track your earnings or stronger insurance protections, we'll continue working to improve the experience for and with drivers."
