Uber driver tests positive to meth in Perth

WA Police said the Uber driver "seriously" put the passenger at risk.

An unsuspecting Uber passenger was left stranded this morning after her driver tested positive for methamphetamine in a roadside drug test in Perth's Victoria Park.

The Uber driver was one of several people nabbed today for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the police operation on Shepperton Road.

WA Police said on Twitter the man was "seriously putting [the] passenger's life at risk".

Officers were out in force across the state this weekend as Western Australians came together at venues and homes to watch the AFL and NRL grand finals.

The positive test sample will now be sent for chemical analysis, with any charges pending the formal results.

Road Safety Commission statistics show 37 per cent of people killed on WA roads are found to have an illegal drug in their system.

Uber Australia said it was investigating the incident and had zero tolerance for drivers working under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

"We make it clear in our community guidelines that anyone who drives on the app having used drugs or alcohol will have their access to the app permanently removed," Uber Australia spokesman Mike Scott said.

Uber drivers in WA undergo a driving and criminal history background check before being given access to the app.
