Uber charges bar worker £72 after taking 'disgraceful' route to house

A bar worker was refunded a "disgraceful" £72 Uber fare after a "long shift" in the city centre.

The employee, who did not wish to be named, was picked up in North John Street shortly after 4am and taken to an address in Huyton.

Screengrabs of the route and receipt show that the Uber driver appeared to travel south onto Aigburth Road, before heading through Speke and past Liverpool Airport before travelling back up the Knowsley Expressway.

When the ECHO checked fares on the Uber app several times during a working weekday, predicted prices ranged between £18 and £22.

The eye-watering fare and odd route was shared on Twitter by Liverpool Nightlife Community Interest Company (CIC), which helps bars, clubs and other businesses involved in the night time economy work with the police and council to increase safety and promote the city.

The screengrabs were posted with an angry emoticon and the caption "Uber charging 1 of our members in the NTE £72 Town-Huyton after a long shift."

Twitter users replied suggesting the fare was "disgraceful" and questioning why the driver "took the long way round".

The ECHO understands the bar worker did not realise the trip was going to be so expensive until the money was taken from their account.

According to the receipt, the normal fare would have been £32.98, but surge charge of 2.3 times that amount was added to take it to a total of £72.73.

When the ECHO approached Uber about the issue, a spokesman said: "The Uber app uses dynamic pricing so that people can get a car when they need it.

"We are always happy to review a trip if there are concerns about the route taken, and provide a fare adjustment where appropriate."

The company confirmed that the rider would be refunded "on this occasion".
