'Uber' car on FIRE after 'exploding within seconds' near Trafalgar Square

This is the moment a car - believed to be an Uber taxi - caught fire in central London today.

Shocked witnesses described the black Ford Galaxy becoming a fireball within seconds on Pall Mall East near Trafalgar Square this afternoon.

"Uber on fire Trafalgar Square.

"Went from smoking to full on in seconds," tweeted one passerby.

Pictures show grey smoke billowing from the scene and multiple stunned onlookers.

The area appears cordoned off in a video shared on Twitter .

A police van is pictured at the scene.

It is unclear if anyone has been injured.

Met Police told Mirror Online the force is aware of the fire.

Roads remain closed in the area.

Transport for London said: "Road closed due to a vehicle fire. Traffic is slow eastbound from Marlborough Road. Haymarket is slow southbound from Coventry Street. Traffic is also on the approaches to Trafalgar Square."

Mirror Online has contacted London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service and Uber for comment.

About 45,000 drivers work for Uber in London, according to the company.

But last year, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan sought powers to limit the number of Uber drivers in the city after a similar move in New York City.
