UB40 fans spot 'upsetting' note on door moments after arriving at gig

Crowds of people were "really upset" after arriving at a UB40 gig to find a notice on the door telling them the show had been postponed.

People turned up at the Olympia on West Derby Road to see the band yesterday, Tuesday, May 17 after the show had previously been cancelled following the death of band member Brian Travers. But when people arrived at the venue they found the doors closed and a note informing them the show had been postponed due to illness.

The Olympia posted on their social media accounts on May 16 that the show was going to be rescheduled with a note from the band apologising for any inconvenience. But people said they weren't notified directly by the venue regarding the cancellations.

One fan told the ECHO she bought tickets costing around £240 to go the show with her dad and uncle. Chris Kemp, 38, from Aintree said when the three of them got to the venue the doors were closed and there was no one there giving instructions as to why.

A note on the door said: "It is with regret that the show this evening is being postponed. We have tried to reach as many of you through email and social media as possible. New dates for the show are expected to be December 2022. Apologies, but it was out of our hands."

Chris told the ECHO she never got an email letting her know the show had been postponed - with the last contact she had regarding the gig saying "hope you enjoy the show" on Saturday, May 14. She said: "There were lots of people who had travelled who didn't know what to do as they were only just finding out then.

"Some people were really upset - they were saying they'd come for their birthday but were now just stuck in a hotel. The doors were closed and there wasn't anyone there to give us more information.

"I was taking my dad who's nearly 80. I just wanted to have a nice night out with him."

One fan wrote on Twitter: "Just got to Liverpool to find the gig cancelled. No email or other communication, just a note on the door," while another added: "Turned up along with other disappointed people only to find cancelled. Poor communication."

UB40 posted a statement on their social media on May 16 notifying fans the show was going to be postponed. The Olympia also posted it on their Twitter account the day before the show.

The band's statement on the venue door said: "Due to illness this week's shows in Liverpool and Nottingham are going to be postponed. New dates will be confirmed soon and all tickets will remain valid. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and look forward to seeing you all soon. Big love, UB40."

The ECHO contacted The Olympia for more information but hadn't heard back at the time of writing.
