UAE Summons Lebanese Ambassador over FM’s ‘Derogatory’ Comments

A general view of Abu Dhabi, UAE. (WAM)

The United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has strongly decried the derogatory and racist statements made by caretaker Lebanese Foreign Minister, Charbel Wehbe, against Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council states.

The Lebanese ambassador to the UAE was summoned by the Ministry and handed a note of protest denouncing the Lebanese minister's remarks, which, the ministry affirmed, fly in the face of all diplomatic norms and are inconsistent with the historical relations between Lebanon and all GCC states, read a statement carried by the state news agency (WAM).

Wehbe appeared to blame Gulf nations for the rise of ISIS in Iraq and neighboring Syria in a television interview on Monday.
