United Arab Emirates Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash stressed on Wednesday it is essential that the region pulls back from current “troubling” tensions.
“De-escalation is both wise and necessary. A political path towards stability must follow,” he said on Twitter.
Tensions have been high in the region following the killing last week of top Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in a US air strike near Baghdad. Iraq has since called American troops to quit the country.
Iran has vowed revenge and early on Wednesday fired a barrage of rockets against American bases in Iraq.
Iranian state television said Iran had fired 15 missiles at US targets. The US military said at least two Iraqi facilities hosting US-led coalition personnel were targeted at about 1:30 am Iraq time (2230 GMT on Tuesday). Iraq said 22 missiles were fired.
Iranian officials said Tehran did not want a war and its strikes "concluded" its response to Soleimani’s killing.
