Why UAB Will Win
Either Illinois is a juggernaut, or Akron is going to need a little while to get going under new head coach Tom Arth. The Zips had no running game, the offensive line was destroyed, and the defense was torn to shreds in the 42-3 loss. Other than that, everything was great.
UAB might have struggled WAY to much against Alabama State, but the pass rush was able to come through when needed. The D was great at getting behind the line, and it shouldn’t have too many problems against an offensive front that allowed six sacks and 12 tackles for loss against the Illini.
Why Akron Will Win
This is supposed to be a rebuilding season for UAB, and it might take longer than expected.
The Blazers were awful against what was supposed to be an overmatched Alabama State team, failing to score in the second half and getting next to nothing for long stretches.
Akron might not have shown it against Illinois, but there are just enough decent offensive parts to be a whole lot stronger. It’ll be the defense that has to produce against a Blazer passing game that went next to nowhere. UAB converted just one of 13 third down chances – Akron has to get off the field on the money downs.

What’s Going To Happen
UAB has several excellent parts, but it’s going to take a bit for it all to come together. At home, Akron will get enough of an efficient effort from the offense to make UAB press. The Zips will be at least +2 in the turnover margin, and they’ll convert on the chances in an ugly game.
