Feb. 25--The prices for School District U46 breakfasts and lunches could increase under a plan first proposed to the school board at its meeting Monday night.
Reduced price breakfasts and lunches would see no increase and remain at 30 cents and 40 cents, respectively, according to district documents.
But regular priced breakfasts would jump a dime, to $1.35 each, according to the plan, which states that prices would still remain below the district average of $1.60.
Regular lunches would increase by 15 cents, to $2.80 per, placing them a nickel above the district average of $2.75.
Milk only would increase 10 cents to 50 cents a serving, according to the district.
The district has not increased prices in two years, according to Claudie Phillips, U46's director of food and nutrition services.
This increase is being proposed so the district will align with federal regulations that require districts to at least get close to the monetary amount they are reimbursed on free or reduced lunches, Phillips told the board.
Districts charging less than the average of $2.78 for paid student lunches during school year 2015-16, as U46 currently does, must either increase the paid meal price, contribute funds to the school food service account or a combination of both, according to the district.
The board will vote on the increases at a future meeting.
