U46 board sees working strategic plan

Feb. 24--The School District U46 board got another look at a working document that will eventually outline the district's strategic plan going forward.

Sanders said the plan was being presented again to confirm it's the plan the board wants to continue building around.

The finalized plan will be brought to the board for approval at the next meeting, he said.

In the works for more than a year, the plan seeks to figure out the district's best path forward when taking into account tightening budgets, increased student diversity, rising accountability and growing regulation.

Officials hope the document will provide guidance in how to use limited resources, while aligning all district stakeholders and prioritizing ways to improve performance.

Much of Monday's brief discussion about the plan saw board members going back and forth about language in one statement that aspired to make graduates "competitive members of the global society."

Board member Jeanette Ward asked that the language be changed to "competitive globally."

"We're not really global citizens," she said.

Vice President Traci O'Neal Ellis recalled going through the process of choosing those words.

"These words were carefully and very deliberatively chosen with lots and lots of input," she said. "I happen to think that, collectively, we do live in a global society."

Future goals of the program involve developing yearly targets for measurable goals and developing an action plan, according to the draft presented to the board.
