U2 frontman Bono pleads with South Korean president to give Ireland vital medical equipment

Bono has pleaded with the president of South Korea to give Ireland vital medical equipment to help beat coronavirus.

The U2 frontman wrote a letter to Moon Jae-in requesting protective personal equipment and diagnostic kits, saying he would foot the bill himself.

The official Twitter account for the South Korean president confirmed he has received a letter from Bono asking to help Irish healthcare workers.

And he has reportedly replied, saying he will “look into it with authorities”.

It has been reported in South Korea that in the recent letter Bono sent he told Mr Jae-in he is “a big fan of you more than ever”.

U2 has already announced it was contributing €10 million for the sourcing and purchase of PPE.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe personally phoned the Dublin rocker earlier this month seeking his help as the country battled with suppliers for the equipment needed to fight Covid-19.

He said: “I explained to him that any role people like him could play in it – because of the way they connect people across the world – would be a little part of the thread of the great story of how Ireland is responding.

“Proactively, off his own bat, he said he wanted to get involved in a very particular thing – he could find new ways of trying to source new PPE equipment for Ireland.”

Bono praised South Korea’s approach and leadership throughout the global pandemic so far.

The country was among the first to be hit by the deadly virus and had the world’s second largest outbreak before it was quickly brought under control due to a widespread testing drive.
