U2 made a surprise appearance at New York’s Grand Central station on Monday night, performing a busking session alongside the Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon.

Video and images posted online showed the group wearing not-entirely-convincing disguises as they gave an acoustic rendition of Angel of Harlem.

The set was filmed for Fallon’s show, where the band are scheduled to appear on Friday.

An Instagram video posted by u2italianfans showed Bono wearing a blue cowboy hat for the occasion, leading a small crowd in a rendition of the band’s 1988 hit.

A tweet by @ShaneAnkeney, perhaps taken earlier in the set, showed the band’s lead singer wearing what appeared to be a blond fake goatee beard. The Edge could be seen wearing a long-haired wig and bandanna.

Fallon had showcased his musical talents earlier on Monday when the Tonight Show released a “backstage acoustic” video showing the comic performing the song Tender with Blur. The band had appeared on Fallon’s show on Friday 1 May after performing their first New York gig in 15 years.

U2 had been scheduled to perform on the Tonight Show every night for a week in mid-November, before Bono suffered an arm injury in a New York cycling accident. On that occasion Fallon stepped in to replace Bono, covering the U2 song Desire with house band the Roots.

Those wishing to travel to Harlem from Grand Central station can take either the Hudson or Harlem lines north. The journey is a mere 10-minute ride to 125th Street.
