U2 bassist Adam Clayton has confirmed in an interview with France’s Le Figaro the Dublin band hope to release a new album in 2023 and tour - Covid permitting.
“We are preparing new songs for an album that should be released in 2023. And if the circumstances allow, we will do a world tour then,” says Clayton, 61.
Clayton chatted to Le Figaro ahead of the release today of a 50-track digital box set celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of U2’s Achtung Baby.
The special release of the album, which spawned hits One, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses and Even Better Than The Real Thing, includes B-Sides with 22 tracks never before available digitally.
Recorded over six months at Berlin’s Hansa Studio and Dublin’s Windmill Lane, the album won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance and is regarded as one of the most significant records of the 90s and of U2’s career.
U2’s most recent album, 2016 Songs of Experience, topped the Irish and American chart but failed to produce any hits.
The band toured the album in 2018 grossing $128m (€113m) with nearly a million tickets sold.
U2 then resumed their Joshua Tree 30th Anniversary tour ending in December, 2019, in India.
The various legs of The Joshua Tree anniversary tours saw the band gross $390.8 million (€345m). Some 3.3 million tickets were sold.
