U-turn made as St Johnstone's Premiership match with Aberdeen is called off

St Johnstone’s Premiership match with Aberdeen this weekend has now been called off.

A Joint Response Group statement on Thursday noted that the game had been given the green light, despite positive coronavirus tests at the Pittodrie club.

The Dons had returned two preliminary positive tests for COVID-19 among its playing squad.

Both players were required to self-isolate, along with a further six players found to have been in close proximity to the initial positive player.

However, following intervention from the Scottish Government, a U-turn decision has been made and the McDiarmid Park match postponed.

First minister Nicola Sturgeon had previously announced new lockdown measures for the city of Aberdeen in the wake of a fresh spike.

The Perth club, while “disappointed” that the game is now off, noted that the health and wellbeing of all involved is of paramount importance.

A Saints spokesperson said: “This weekend’s Scottish Premiership fixture against Aberdeen at McDiarmid Park has been postponed.

“The club is disappointed at the news of this postponement but the health and wellbeing of everybody is of paramount importance in this situation.

“We’re also disappointed for our season ticket holders and supporters who were looking forward to watching the match.

“We will keep you updated with news regarding the rescheduling of this fixture.”
