U.S. working to add $300 million in civilian aid to Afghanistan: Blinken

The Biden administration is working with Congress to provide an additional $300 million in civilian assistance to Afghanistan, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Wednesday.

The aid "is being made available now to demonstrate our enduring support for the Afghan people," Blinken said in a statement. The funding will be targeted at a range of efforts from economic aid to fighting corruption and promoting women's empowerment, he said.

President Joe Biden announced last week he would pull U.S. combat troops out of Afghanistan by Sept. 11.
