U.S. Urged to Take Stronger Action Against Iranian Attacks

"The attack on U.S. forces was ongoing and the response was appropriate."

In a recent strike, the United States has responded to ongoing attacks on its personnel in the region. While experts commend the US for taking action, some argue that it falls short of what is necessary to deter future attacks. The strike was in retaliation for the attack carried out by Hezbollah, which left one US personnel critically injured. Foreign policy expert Rebecca Heinrichs suggests that although the counterattack is appropriate, it still comes too late. Numerous attacks against US forces have occurred since Hezbollah's assault on Israel in October of last year, totaling over a hundred incidents.

Heinrichs emphasizes the need for a more significant response to compel the Iranian regime to understand the consequences of attacking US troops. She believes that pinpoint strikes are insufficient and advocates for a massive attack targeting Iranian paramilitary groups. According to Heinrichs, the US is aware of their locations and should have eliminated them long ago to prevent the ongoing attacks.

With the recent history of conflicts in the Middle East, questions arise about the effectiveness of US involvement and the potential to rely on over-the-horizon capabilities. Heinrichs acknowledges that major combat operations ceased several years ago, but emphasizes the importance of US forces in providing counterterrorism operations and supporting Iraqi security forces. However, she argues that losing personnel in Afghanistan has weakened the US's counterterrorism capabilities in the region. Therefore, Heinrichs stresses the necessity of US forces being able to defend themselves and launch counteroffensives when attacked.

Regarding the vulnerability of US troops in Iraq, Heinrichs deems it unacceptable for them to be in small numbers without the ability to go on the counteroffensive. She argues for a stronger response to deter Iran from attacking US forces. While she believes the US has substantial firepower in the region, she emphasizes the need for resolve and the willingness to employ it effectively.

Furthermore, Heinrichs highlights the importance of US leadership in maintaining security in key trade routes such as the Red Sea. Recent terrorist attacks on cargo ships in the region have raised concerns. The success of the US in garnering support from allies like France depends on its strength, clarity, and strategic direction.

In conclusion, while the recent US strike in response to attacks on its personnel is deemed appropriate, there are calls for a more significant and proactive approach to deter future attacks. The ongoing threats faced by US forces in the region necessitate a robust and determined response to protect American interests and maintain stability.
