U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos says she's tested positive for coronavirus

CHICAGO — Democratic U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos of Illinois said Monday she had tested positive for COVID-19 and is isolating at home with mild symptoms.

Bustos, 59, who survived a closer-than-expected bid for reelection to a fifth term earlier this month, announced her diagnosis on Twitter, saying she has been in contact with her medical provider and is self-isolating based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"I am experiencing mild symptoms, but still feel well," Bustos, who represents northwestern Illinois' 17th Congressional District, tweeted.

"Consistent with medical advice, I will be working remotely from my home in Illinois until cleared by my physician. All individuals that I had been in contact with have been notified," she said. "Across the country and the congressional district I serve, COVID case numbers are skyrocketing. We must all continue to be vigilant in following public health best practices: wear a mask, practice social distancing, get your flu shot and wash your hands."

At least two other members of Illinois' 18-member delegation to the U.S. House previously tested positive for coronavirus — Republican Reps. Rodney Davis of Taylorville in August and Mike Bost of Murphysboro in October.

Bustos has been chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign arm of House Democrats. She announced she would not seek another term in the post following elections in which Republicans picked up seats in contrast to the significant gains that House Democrats had expected.
