U.S. Now Has More Recorded Covid-19 Cases Than Any Other Nation

What’s new: The U.S. has outpaced China to report the most coronavirus cases in the world since late Thursday Eastern Standard Time, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Over the past few days, the total number of infections in the U.S. has surged due to accelerated virus testing, approaching 86,000 as of the end of Thursday local time. In contrast, China’s caseload has risen at a far slower clip over the past few weeks, reaching 82,078 (link in Chinese) as of the end of Thursday.

What else you need to know: New York City has been overwhelmed by the outbreak, recording over 23,000 infections so far, which account for over a quarter of the U.S.’ total.

The death toll in the country rose to 1,296 on Thursday evening in the U.S., ranking sixth in the world, after Italy, Spain, China, Iran and France.
