U.S. Open: A rogue seagull moved Phil Mickelson’s perfect drive

Phil Mickelson moved up the leaderboard Friday with a wild round of 2-under that included four bogeys and six birdies – or seven, if you include the seagull that moved Mickelson’s ball in the 10th fairway.

Mickelson hit a signature “bomb” off the tee at 10, blasting his ball 343 yards at the long 497-yard par-4 – but he lost a few inches of distance when a seagull came over and pecked his ball several times.

Per the rules of golf, if Mickelson saw that the bird had moved his ball after it had come to rest, it should be moved back to its original position with no penalty. Had the bird taken the ball in its mouth and flown away, Mickelson could replace his ball with a new one.
