U.S. Olympic Committee contacts Los Angeles about 2024 Summer Games

July 28--The U.S. Olympic Committee has contacted Los Angeles about the possibility of stepping in as a replacement bidder for the 2024 Summer Games, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who is not authorized to speak publicly.

USOC officials were expected to make a call in the wake of Boston dropping its troubled bid.

"The USOC would very much like to see an American city host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024," Scott Blackmun, the committee's chief executive, said Monday. "We will immediately begin to explore whether we can do so on a basis consistent with our guiding principles."

On Tuesday, neither the committee nor city officials would comment.

The USOC was also expected to reach out to San Francisco and Washington, the other finalists in a four-city competition to be the designated American bidder.

Los Angeles finished a close second in that contest and is now favored to be the substitute if the USOC decides to move forward.

Candidate cities must officially notify the International Olympic Committee by mid-September. The IOC will select a host in the summer of 2017.
