U.S. forecaster says 40 percent chance of cyclone east of Lesser Antilles

(Reuters) - A low pressure system about 800 miles east of the Lesser Antilles has a 40 percent chance of strengthening into a tropical cyclone, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Wednesday.

The low is expected to move westward across the tropical Atlantic Ocean, crossing into the Caribbean Sea on Friday, the Miami-based weather forecaster said.

A gradual development for another area of low pressure located about 800 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands is possible with the system having a 40 percent chance of developing into a cyclone in the next two days, the NHC said.

However, the weather forecaster said that upper-level winds could make it less conducive for tropical cyclone formation when the disturbance moves north of the Leeward Islands this weekend.
