WASHINGTON -- A senior White House official gave a statement to The Yomiuri Shimbun on Friday, expressing his respect for the efforts of Shigeru Yokota, who died the same day, to resolve the North Korean abduction issue.
"For years, he [Yokota] and his family have tirelessly worked to secure the release of Japanese citizens .... We honor him for his work," the statement said.
A spokesperson at the U.S. State Department also issued a statement, saying that the United States will continue to call upon Pyongyang to promptly solve the abduction issue, indicating its stance of closely cooperating with Tokyo over an early return of Japanese abductees.
