The 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which had been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be held March 7-12 in Kyoto, Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa has announced.
The U.N. meeting, also known as the Kyoto Congress, will take place at the Kyoto International Conference Center. Some participating countries are expected to send ministers, and the event will be conducted both online and in-person.
The event is the largest international conference held by the United Nations on crime prevention and criminal justice, and is held every five years.
Japan is hosting the gathering for the first time in 50 years.
The conference was initially scheduled for April last year, but was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
About 10 countries have expressed the intention to send representatives, according to the ministry. Measures to prevent the spread of infections will be taken.
The number of delegates allowed into Japan will be limited to the minimum, and they will be requested to take tests twice -- first within 72 hours of departure from their country and then upon arrival.
Representatives will be prohibited from using public transportation. Chartered vehicles will transport them from designated accommodations to the conference venue.
