Tyson Fury tells BBC to remove him from Sports Personality of the Year shortlist

Tyson Fury has demanded that the BBC to remove him from the shortlist for this year’s Sports Personality of the Year award.

The 32-year-old boxing champ was among the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Hollie Doyle to be nominated for the annual award.

But the self-styled Gypsy King says he does not need the ‘verification’ of the award as he is 'already the people’s champion'.

He has asked fans not to vote for him during a social media clip posted earlier today.

“This is a message for the BBC and their SPOTY award”, he said.

“Please take me off your list as I am the people’s champion and I have no need for verification for any other awards.

“I know who I am and what I have done in sport. The love of all the people is worth more to me than all of the awards in the world.

“So to all of my supporters, please don’t vote on this. Take me off the list.”

Tyson was nominated for the award after becoming the two-time world heavyweight champion in February this year.

He claimed the WBC title following his Las Vegas rematch against Deontay Wilder.

The Manchester-born star has made a remarkable comeback to boxing after a lengthy battle with depression and drugs.

Fury finished fourth in 2015 when controversy surrounded his inclusion on the shortlist.

The BBC were urged to remove him from the shortlist amid accusations of homophobic and sexist comments.

Formula One star Lewis Hamilton is the bookies’ favourite to take home this year’s award on December 20.
