Tyson Fury's trainer offers new reason for world champion's retirement

Tyson Fury 's trainer has revealed the heavyweight retired from boxing after being several big fights falling through during his career.

'The Gypsy King' announced his retirement after knocking out Dillian Whyte at Wembley last month. The WBC champion insists he will only fight again in exhibition bouts, teasing a 'hybrid-rules' fight with UFC champion Francis Ngannou moments after his recent win.

Fury said he has nothing left to prove in the sport after winning all of the belts he can. Despite never achieving undisputed status in his career, Fury said he sees himself as an undisputed champion as he exits the sport for good.

His coach SugarHill Steward has now said a big part of Fury calling it quits is because of fights that have fallen through. "I know a lot of the retirement has to do with not getting the fights he wants," Steward told Sky Sports.

"It’s really mentally challenging to be offered fights and go through negotiations for fights and then for them to fall through at the end. For him being retired I’m happy because that’s what he wants."

Fury has taken part in huge fights during his career, such as an epic trilogy with Deontay Wilder and unified title clash with Wladimir Klitschko. But for all the good fights he's been involved in, Fury has also missed out on bouts with huge names.

David Haye pulled out of a fight against Fury twice, once in 2013 and the other in 2014. Fury was supposed to finally fight bitter rival Anthony Joshua last August, but his trilogy with Wilder stopped the undisputed clash from happening.

Steward partnered with Fury after his nervy win against Otto Wallin in 2019, with 'The Gypsy King' credited the trainer for changing him to a knockout-focused fighter. Steward said Fury being "hurt" by boxing should be taken into consideration as many fans have criticised his decision to retire.

“These things happen to many fighters around the world. You wouldn’t expect it to happen on this big a stage but it does happen and it’s something fighters have to deal with," Steward continued.

“We on the outside sometimes don’t understand that. We just say ‘if he gets the fight he’ll come back’, it’s not as easy as being on the outside going through what happens on the inside. It’s the sport he loves so much, and it’s hurting him like that. Those things have to be taken into consideration and respected."
