Tyson Fury explains to Mike Tyson how he came to be named after boxing legend

Tyson Fury was not born to be a heavyweight; in fact he was lucky to be born at all.

Yet having been named after his dad's pugilistic hero, he went on to conquer boxing's premier division.

And as Fury sat down with Mike Tyson, he explained how he was arguably destined to follow in the legend's footsteps.

"My dad [John] was a professional boxer in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s. [He was] a heavyweight and his hero was you," he told Tyson on his Hotboxin' podcast .

"So when I was born August 12, 1988, I came into the world and I was eight weeks premature. I was dying, I wasn't supposed to live.

"But when I lived my dad said I’m going to call you after my favorite heavyweight Tyson.

"The doctor said, 'No that's not going to be a good name, he’s not going to be very big this guy'.

"When I was born, I only weighed one pound in weight. I was tiny, but I grew up to be 6ft 9in and 265 pounds - it's crazy."

Fury became heavyweight world champion in 2015 when he outpointed Wladimir Klitschko in Germany.

He was later stripped of his three belts however as he descended into a drink and drug-fuelled depression.

But he fought back 18 months ago and lost almost 10 stone before making his comeback.

Fury was denied victory over Deontay Wilder last December when the judges scored their bout a draw - but he will have a second chance to dethrone the American in February.

And the Brit is confident he will be fit in time having suffered a bad cut above his right eye against Otto Wallin earlier this year.

He said: “I'm ready for war. I think it was just over 40 stitches inside and out with both the cuts.

“Listen I'm all right. It's boxing. You can't go swimming and not get wet. It's the fight game.”
