Tyson Fury opens up on 'banter' phone calls with Anthony Joshua and Wayne Rooney

Tyson Fury has admitted he spends some of his spare time making phone calls to heavyweight rivals Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte for a laugh.

The Gypsy King also revealed he sometimes gives ex-England and Man Utd captain Wayne Rooney a call just for fun.

Fury's antics are particularly surprising with regards to Joshua, who he is hoping to share the ring with later this year.

The pair looked poised for a December showdown prior to the coronavirus outbreak, which could scupper their plans.

Fury told BT Sport: "I call Joshua. Sometimes I say: 'What's happening Mush?' We have a little back and forth. I tell him I'm going to knock him out, he says: 'I'm going to knock you out'.

"I said: 'After your last performance, you'll need a lot of improvement to knock me out, I'll tell you that'. We have a little laugh, it's a bit of banter, isn't it?"

Fury's reputation as a joker is well-known, and it seems there's no stopping him when armed with a list of high-profile contacts.

"If you think about it, you've got all these famous sportspeople in your phone, you have a couple of beers, what are you going to do? We're only human after all," he added.

Joshua often joins in the banter with Fury (PA)

"It's just me having a bit of banter with the lads. I call Dillian Whyte, I call Rooney, Anthony Joshua - I call them all."

Fury must first navigate a third fight with Deontay Wilder in a rematch for the WBC heavyweight title before he can set his sights on Joshua.

That bout was pencilled in for a July date, while Joshua has a clash with Kubrat Pulev scheduled for June 20 in London.

However Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn has suggested that bout could be moved back to July to avoid any problems as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

With the fight due to be held at Tottenham's stadium, much depends on when the Premier League season resumes.

But Fury's promoter Bob Arum feels Joshua should be in no rush to meet the Bulgarian, as he feels Pulev will beat the Brit.

Speaking about Joshua to iFL TV, Arum said: "He has no chin. I knew Andy Ruiz prior to his first fight with Joshua.

"If you compare Ruiz with Pulev, Pulev is a much better fighter than Andy Ruiz.

"Therefore, what I’ve said is if Ruiz can knock Joshua out, then Pulev has an even better chance to knock him out."
