Tyson Fury will look to have “more authority” with his punches in the rematch with Deontay Wilder, according to new assistant trainer Andy Lee.
Fury split with head trainer Ben Davison earlier this month and Lee has been drafted in to help alongside his replacement Javan ‘SugarHill’ Steward.
The Irishman, who retired in 2018, grew close with Fury during their time working underneath legendary trainer Emmanuel Steward. Fury narrowly beat a 10-count to go the distance with Deontay Wilder in a thrilling draw last year and after two interim bouts, the rematch is set for 22 February in Las Vegas.
Lee believes the impact of ‘SugarHill’ will see Fury approach the fight more aggressively this time, with intent to pursue a stoppage should the opportunity present itself.
“I think Tyson, for the Wilder fight, will have to do what he does – feint, move, be tricky, unpredictable – but also have a little more authority in his punches,” Lee told BBC 5 Live.
“He hurt Wilder several times first time around. With ‘SugarHill’ in the corner, if he has him hurt again, I think you will see Tyson going for the finish.”
Lee is still unsure on why Davison and Fury split and insists he will try to help the pair reconcile if he can.
But the former world middleweight champion is excited to team up with Fury in 2020 and revealed the role he will occupy during their training camp in Las Vegas.
“My role is basically to be another set of eyes, to give advice where I can, if I see something I think can be improved or worked on,” Lee added.
“You can’t serve too many masters in boxing. There can’t be dissenting voices. It could always be difficult having two main coaches in a camp. So I guess that was Ben’s decision.
“It’s a shame it’s gone this way as Tyson and Ben have been one of the great stories of the past few years with Tyson coming back from the abyss.”
