Tyson Fury misses out on award nomination despite Deontay Wilder win

Tyson Fury will not be named British Boxer of the Year despite his stunning win over Deontay Wilder.

The heavyweight was crowned world champion for the second time following his seventh-round stoppage last February.

But because he does not hold a British boxing license, he cannot be considered for the annual award.

Fury's bitter rival Anthony Joshua, who beat Kubrat Pulev to retain his own titles, is among the nominees which include Lyndon Arthur, Terri Harper, Joe Joyce and Josh Taylor.

The British Boxing Board of Control said: "Whilst Tyson Fury's recent achievements are recognised, he is not licensed by the BBBofC and therefore cannot be considered for BBBofC Boxer of the Year."

Fury has not fought in the UK since he outpointed Francesco Pianeta in 2018 in his second fight since returning from a three-year drink and drug-fulled depression.

Since then he has fought exclusively in America with three of his four fights taking place in Las Vegas.

And Fury claims he will see out his career on the other side of the Atlantic, despite the expectation that his proposed second fight with Joshua later this year will take place in Cardiff.

"I won’t ever box here again," he told iFL TV. [I am] finished; the superstar of world boxing is not going to box in a small hall show somewhere.

"It's got to be in the capital of entertainment in the world. My home city is Vegas, I've had my last three fights there.

"My last four fights have been California, Staples Center, MGM Grand Garden Arena, T-Mobile Arena, MGM, they've all been over there. So I intend to stay there and end my career over there."

Fury also cast doubt on whether he will fight Joshua at all despite an instance to the contrary from promoter Eddie Hearn.

Hearn has repeatedly said a deal is close and that contracts will be signed within days, but Fury claimed he had stopped training and was instead downing 12 pints a day.

"Until I've got a date and a load of money in my pocket, there's no fight," Fury added. "There's a lot of things going on that people don't know behind the scenes that can scupper a fight.

"We're nowhere near at the moment."
