Tyson Foods (TSN) Stock Lower, Recalls Chicken Nuggets Believed to Contain Plastic

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Shares of Tyson Foods  (TSN)  were retreating in pre-market trading on Wednesday as the Springdale, AR-based food company recalled approximately 132,520 pounds of chicken nuggets at U.S. Costco (COST) locations after customers said they found pieces of plastic in the chicken.

Tyson said in a statement that the plastic pieces have been found in a "very small number" of chicken nuggets and that no injuries were reported with the recall.

The plastic may have originated from a rod used to connect a plastic transfer belt, the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said, according to Reuters

The Department of Agriculture classified the recall as Class I, which is defined as a health hazard situation that can cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.

Tyson added that the affected chicken nuggets were in its 5-pound Panko Chicken Nugget bags. Several 20 pound packages of Spare Time brand chicken nuggets were also affected and sold to a retailer in Pennsylvania, the company noted.

Separately, TheStreet Ratings objectively rated this stock according to its "risk-adjusted" total return prospect over a 12-month investment horizon. Not based on the news in any given day, the rating may differ from Jim Cramer's view or that of this articles's author. TheStreet Ratings has this to say about the recommendation:

The team rates Tyson Foods as a Buy with a ratings score of A+. This is based on the convergence of positive investment measures, which should help this stock outperform the majority of stocks that it rates. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its solid stock price performance, impressive record of earnings per share growth, attractive valuation levels, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures and notable return on equity. The team feels its strengths outweigh the fact that the company shows weak operating cash flow.
