Tyrrell Hatton ready to prove Ryder Cup star for Europe, says Prestwick caddie Mark Crane

Ryder Cup firebrand Tyrrell Hatton is ready to prove ice cool on the big stage - according to his Prestwick caddie.

Mark Crane insists the rising star from Buckinghamshire will curb his temper during this week's clash in Paris.

It comes as the spotlight shines on Europe's underdogs and their ability to perform against a formidable American line-up.

But Crane, who has proved a lethal partner for Hatton since taking his bag earlier this year, believes Hatton will thrive in the Paris pressure cooker.

He said: "People have a perception of Tyrrell from the TV and view him as a fiery character.

"Away from that he's actually quite different and we get on incredibly well, which is why it works on the course.

"He wears his heart on his sleeve and there's nothing wrong with that.

"I guess I'm there as the calming influence!"

The pair have joined forces to register top ten finishes in the US Open and PGA Championship this season.

And Crane, 36, who runs Prestwick's Bar Central, is expecting another big performance.

He said: "Everyone is tipping the Americans but I’m not sure why they’re favourites.

"The Europeans know this course well and being accurate off the tee will be vital.

"Do the Americans have a formidable looking team? Sure.

"But we also have plenty of guys at the top of their game and it's going to be an incredible contest."

The appearance marks Crane's second Ryder Cup, following his debut in 2016 at Hazeltine carrying the bag of Chris Wood.

Meanwhile, Barassie greenkeeper Kerr Rowan is among an army of 180 course staff working at Le Golf National.

The 39-year-old, now a course manager in Gothenburg, Sweden, said: “It’s a huge honour.

“Any golf fan would give their right arm to be involved in what is the pinnacle of our sport.

“The rough is long and will undoubtedly favour the Europeans.

“But you look at the line-up coming across from America and have to say they are worthy favourites.”

Kerr, who grew up playing Royal Troon, has been drafted in by friend, Alejandro Reyes, who is course manager at the Ryder Cup venue.

Kerr said: “This will be the second Ryder Cup I’ve worked at and nothing compares to the event.

“I’m on holes two, three, 13 and 14 and some of the stuff they’ve done with the course is incredible.

“It’s been totally stripped back and rebuilt just for this week.”

The event kicks off on Friday and is live on Sky Sports from 6.30am.
