Tyrone's Conor Meyler among winners of GAA/GPA Player of the Month awards

Tyrone's Conor Meyler has scooped the GAA/GPA football Player of the Month award for September.

Meyler played a critical role in Tyrone's All-Ireland success, with his tireless performances from wing forward paving the path to glory for Brian Dooher and Feargal Logan's men.

Cathal McShane's improvised fisted goal stole the attention of every fan watching the final, but it was a pinpoint pass from Meyler that created the goal chance itself.

Meyler's fitness paid dividends in the final as he went the extra mile and sprung as a willing ball-carrier when the game was stretched and legs were tiring late on. Already named in The Sunday Game's Team of the Year, Meyler will also be a contender for the Footballer of the Year award.

Elsewhere, Meath Ladies' Vikki Wall scooped the Ladies' football Player of the Month award for the second month in a row after she played a huge role in Meath's toppling of the five-in-a-row chasing Dublin.

Like Meyler, Wall's influence was apparent less on the scoreboard and more in the rough and tumble of the contest, involving herself at both ends of the pitch as a strong runner on the ball as she proved a magnet for Dublin defenders who struggled to dispossess her all throughout the final.

Finally, the Player of the Month for camogie was secured by Antrim's Maeve Kelly.

Kelly produced an outstanding display as Antrim defeated Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Intermediate camogie final, with her 1-5 giving Antrim a critical edge over the Cats; the sum total of her scoring was also the margin of victory as the match ended 2-21 to 2-13 in favour of the Saffrons.

Speaking on behalf of the GPA, CEO Tom Parsons praised the worthy winners.

He said: “To step up to the plate and produce your best performance when it comes to the All-Ireland final is an outstanding achievement in itself.

"To be recognised by your fellow players for doing so is a real mark of respect.

"Congratulations to Maeve, Vikki and Conor on being voted for by their peers to win these awards which cap off a very memorable season.

"Congratulations too to the nominees and indeed to all the winners and nominees of the player of the month awards in 2021.”
