Tyrone legend Sean Cavanagh says it’s the GAA’s responsibility to address 16-man controversy

Sean Kavanagh has accused the GAA of shirking responsibility following the fallout from the 16-man controversy at the recent All-Ireland Senior Football Club Championship Final.

Kilmacud Crokes beat Watty Graham's Glen but footage soon emerged of a 16th Kilmacud man on the pitch defending a late Glen free.

Glen have since lodged an official objection to the result after apparently being told by the GAA that the Central Competition Control Committee (CCCC) would not investigate the issue, despite the rules allowing for this. Kilmacud then launched a counter-objection. A hearing is expected to take place this week.

Speaking on RTE2's Allianz League Sunday highlights programme Cavanagh blasted the GAA's handling of the saga.

He said:"This is crazy. It's a rules breach. It's down to the GAA to fix this. The GAA must fix this.

"How they have sat back and put this back on amateur clubs, It was a great final and it has almost taken the taste of it."

Cavanagh has also blamed the GAA's vague regulations around player substitutions

He added: "It should never have happened. In any sport, you look at basketball, soccer, there's a specific way in which you take people on and off.

"There are so many things wrong with these rules and laws.

"How many times do we sit here and talk about appeals, teams being named before games, melees, refereeing decisions, Hawk-Eye last year?"

Cavanagh was sharing punditry duties with six-time All-Ireland winner Paul Flynn, who also labelled GAA rules as 'vague'.

He said: "Culturally we have a very peculiar relationship with the rules in the GAA, it's partly because they're vague. The rules have to suit junior football and inter-county football, and that's just not going to work.

"When you have vague rules, you need to have strong leadership and we didn't see it this week from the GAA."
