Tyrone ace Mattie Donnelly expects Cavan to come all guns blazing after Ulster loss

Mattie Donnelly is expecting Cavan to come out all guns blazing against Tyrone after their Ulster final loss.

With a first Super 8s appearance the prize for the Breffni men, Donnelly predicts that the disappointment of going down to Donegal in their first provincial final in 18 years will be put aside by Cavan.

Tyrone themselves saw off Kildare in Newbridge last Saturday to set up a winner takes all clash in Clones.

"They'll still be targeting the Super 8s," said the influential Red Hands star.

"Prior to their provincial final they were targeting the Super 8s, now they've had two weeks to lick their wounds - and, look, it's county football, professional set-ups. They'll have that buried and will have moved on.

"They still have a massive chance of getting into the Super 8s, that's how they'll be viewing it. They'll be coming at us hammer and tongs.

"The 12 teams left that are trying to get into that last 8 - they all expect to be in the Super 8s, so you were going to get a tricky one no matter who you pulled out of the hat.

"It's going to be very similar. It's going to be a quick turnaround, I suppose that's the novelty of the backdoor, you get your opponent on Monday morning and you prepare as well as you can.

"You have the previous game digested and reviewed and done and dusted early in the week because you have to turn your focus to the next opposition. It requires a lot of detail and focus."

Having started the championship in a more advanced role, Donnelly has been moved back into a more central role by Mickey Harte - who denied after the Kildare victory that he had reverted the Red Hands tactics to type.

"It's just the role I'll be given week to week, it depends on the opposition," shrugged Donnelly, who was one of the stand-out performers in Newbridge.

"I just felt maybe we were a bit light, we were down a few around the middle, the likes of (Padraig) Hampsey, Tiernan (McCann), Richie (Donnelly) and that, boys coming back from injury, they're big players around that middle section.

"So just take it as a bit of solidity around the middle. He's based me there and I'm happy to do a job."

Satisfied with the 10 point victory, Donnelly added: "There's a great atmosphere here, we were extremely focused coming down the road and we knew what we were up against in Kildare.

"We knew what to expect and it was really about just focused and calm in the big moments".
