Colby Covington says he’s willing to fight in the UFC on ESPN+ 29 main event. Tyron Woodley, however, disagrees.
A former UFC welterweight champion, Woodley was scheduled to fight Leon Edwards in the UFC on ESPN+ 29 headliner. As a result of the event being moved from London to the United States due to the coronavirus outbreak, Woodley (19-4-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC) was left opponent-less. That’s when former welterweight title challenger Covington (15-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) offered up his services in a tweet.
Shortly after Covington’s offer, Woodley accused Covington of not wanting the fight in a post on Instagram. Across a picture of Covington, Woodley wrote “This (expletive) all cap! I said yes and he said I’m just kidding.”
In addition to the writing on the image, Woodley wrote a caption. He indicated there are options for him to fight Saturday and declared he plans on competing.
“I’m ready to fight! I’m trained to kill. Sorting through the smoke. This bitch above’s a joke. Few options. I’ll keep y’all updated. IM FIGHTING SAT!”
Covington has not competed since UFC 245 in December when champion Kamaru Usman finished him by strikes in Round 5. The loss snapped a seven-fight winning streak dating back to June 2016.
UFC on ESPN+ 29 is scheduled to take place Saturday and stream on ESPN+. The promotion has not finalized a location, though UFC president Dana White said it will happen in the United States barring a “government shutdown.”
