Broncos quarterback Drew Lock wasn’t afraid to target receivers covered by Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu in a 23-3 loss at Arrowhead Stadium in the snow last December.
Shortly before halftime of that game, Lock threw a beautiful pass to wide receiver Courtland Sutton with Mathieu in coverage. Sutton caught the ball in the end zone only to have it knocked out of his hands by Mathieu.
On Monday morning, Mathieu quote-tweeted a video of the play on Twitter. Mathieu said Lock will be a good QB but needs to stop testing him.
“We missed some opportunities [in that game],” Sutton said on May 14. “I know that y’all have seen the play with Tyrann Mathieu. That play is something that did haunt me for a while. I moved on from it.”
Denver lost that game against Kansas City but Sutton believes Lock gave the team a fighting chance. The young QB will probably continue testing Mathieu in 2020 and Sutton will be motivated to not let him down.
“I also had another drop, a slant in that game,” Sutton said. “That bothers me thinking about it, but Drew didn’t play bad in that game at all. He was giving us chances to win. For him to go 4-1 as a rookie, it brings so much promise to this upcoming season.
“I know everyone in our building is excited to see his second year of what he’s going to do because, like I said, there’s so much promise.”
