Tyrann Mathieu criticizes Titans for bungling Derrick Henry, Ryan Tannehill contracts

The Tennessee Titans will have back two of their offensive cornerstones next year.

Ryan Tannehill got a four-year deal worth $118 million and the Titans put the franchise tag on Derrick Henry, who led the NFL in rushing with 1,540 yards.

Despite the fact that Tannehill was really good in the limited time he spent as a starter, it was Henry who was the centerpiece of the offense. He also led the NFL with 303 attempts and 20.2 carries per game. In other words, maybe the Titans reversed who deserved the big contract?

That’s what Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu opined on Monday as the news broke:

Damn they paid the QB but the RB who made the QB job 75% lighter he don’t get no love. Boy it’s cold, thank God that man come from a good family.

This is a good reminder that the running back market is saturated, and also this is how NFL teams maneuver to use the franchise tag to their advantage. Henry probably did deserve more money on paper, but in today’s world when overpaying RBs — something the Titans can still do post-tagging — is a bad idea, he’s going to, as Mathieu said, “get no love.”
