Tyrann Mathieu congratulates Deion Jones on signing his extension

Falcons linebacker Deion Jones signed a contract extension earlier this week that will pay him $57 million over the next four years. Jones is one of the top young off-ball linebackers in the league and deserves every penny of his new deal. Just ask his peers.

Here’s what fellow LSU product Tyrann Mathieu shared on Twitter congratulating Jones on his big pay day.

Mathieu secured a bag of his own recently. After the Cardinals cut him, Mathieu signed a one-year, prove it deal with the Texans. He played well enough in Houston to land a new three-year contract with the Chiefs, worth a reported $42 million.

When healthy, Mathieu is one of the NFL’s most talented and versatile safeties. He should help fix Kansas City’s greatest weakness – the secondary. One other major change the Chiefs made was letting defensive coordinator Bob Sutton go and replacing him with Steve Spagnuolo. If that move and the Mathieu signing both work out, the Chiefs defense should be much improved, even after losing a couple of key pieces up front.

Assuming MVP Patrick Mahomes continues to shine and Tyreek Hill doesn’t get into more trouble off the field, the Chiefs should be a Super Bowl contender again, perhaps even the team to beat.

Sutton has since been hired by the Falcons to fill a new role as a game management assistant.
