'Typical VAR!' - The Liverpool fans basking in Spurs' misfortune amid Harry Kane injury blow

Tottenham striker Harry Kane could miss out on facing Premier League leaders Liverpool after being forced off with an injury in Spurs' defeat against Southampton.

It was a disappointing start to the new year for Spurs as they lost out 1-0 against the Saints, with Danny Ings netting the only goal of the game at St Mary's.

Tottenham put in a disappointing display on the south coast, with Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy rarely tested as the Lilywhites slipped six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for a top four finish.

To compound Spurs' misery, Harry Kane went off in the second half of the game at St Mary's, after appearing to pull his hamstring when putting the ball into the net from a Christian Eriksen free kick.

What to expect from Tottenham in the January transfer window

The goal was ruled out for offside, but to make matters worse, the England captain was also forced off injured, with Erik Lamela coming on to replace him, as Kane left the stadium on crutches after the game.

That followed an earlier injury to Tanguy Ndombele, with the Frenchman going off in the first half after picking up a knock early on, having recently missed games through injury.

And with Liverpool up next for Spurs in the league, some Tottenham fans are concerned about the prospect of facing the league leaders without their top goalscorers.

But while Spurs fans are bemoaning their misfortune, it is contrasting emotions for Liverpool supporters.

Here's what they have been saying on social media.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho said after the game that it was a negative for Tottenham, although he did not confirm the extent of the injury, adding that would need to be determined.

But Son Heung-min should be available for Spurs against Liverpool, after serving the last of his three-match suspension following a red card against Chelsea.

Spurs face Middlesbrough in the FA Cup this weekend.
