'Typical' - Palace fans react to Liverpool injury blow that hands Eagles fresh transfer setback

Crystal Palace's hopes of signing Nathaniel Clyne from Liverpool this summer are over after the defender was ruled out for several months with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The former Palace academy graduate has been linked with a return to south London this summer after finding his opportunities limited on Merseyside, due to the emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

Clyne has also had injury problems and spent the second half of last season out on loan at Bournemouth.

But he was involved as Liverpool travelled to America as part of their pre-season preparations, only for the right-back to return home early after sustaining an injury in the Reds' tour match against Borussia Dortmund on Friday.

The extent of the damage was not realised until a few days after the game, with Clyne now back in the UK as he begins his rehabilitation.

The injury ends any chances of a move for Clyne this summer, with Palace being linked with the full-back as a potential replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was sold to Manchester United in a deal worth around £50million.

Cruciate ligament injuries usually rule players out for up to nine months, but Liverpool are optimistic that he won't be out for as long as that.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp told the club website that, according to the Reds' medical staff, it is a straightforward ACL injury, which he described as the "silver lining" for Clyne.

Nevertheless, he is unlikely to play again in 2019 and as such, is set to now remain with Liverpool as he enters the final year of his contract on Merseyside, having signed a five-year deal when he joined the Reds from Southampton in 2015.

And the news of his injury has been prompted a reaction from Palace fans, who have so far been frustrated in the transfer window with only one player - 31-year-old goalkeeper Stephen Henderson - joining the Eagles so far this summer.

Here's what some Palace fans have been saying on social media following the news of Clyne's injury.
