More than three million people in Japan have been warned to evacuate as Typhoon Hagibis made landfall on Saturday, minutes after a 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit the country.

The typhoon, forecast as the strongest to hit Japan in decades, has already brought heavy rainfall in wide areas of Japan, including Shizuoka and Mie prefectures, south-west of Tokyo, as well as Chiba to the north.

It made landfall in Shizuoka at about 7.30pm local time (11.30am UK time).

Earlier, in Chiba prefecture, a tornado overturned a car in the city of Ichihara killing a man inside, city official Tatsuya Sakamaki said. Five people were also injured when the tornado ripped through a house.
