Typhoon No. 8 was moving slowly westward across the east coast of Chiba Prefecture on Tuesday morning, causing delays and rescheduling of Olympic events including surfing.
The Meteorological Agency said the typhoon would move northward and make landfall in the Tohoku region between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
In the 24 hours through 6 a.m. Wednesday, 200 millimeters of rain was forecast for the Tohoku region, and 100 millimeters was forecast for the Kanto-Koshin and Hokuriku regions.
The Tohoku and Kanto-Koshin regions were expected to receive gusts of up to 108 kph.
Olympic surfing medal events on Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach in Chiba Prefecture were pushed forward to Tuesday from Wednesday. Rowing races scheduled for Tuesday were moved to Wednesday or later and the start times of individual events in archery and the women's triathlon were delayed.
The Miyagi prefectural government canceled the activities of the about 280 volunteers who had been scheduled to assist spectators attending events at Miyagi Stadium, including the women's soccer match between Japan and Chile.
East Japan Railway Co. was expected to suspend all or part of eight train services between Tokyo and Shinjo stations on the Yamagata Shinkansen line from 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
