The Japan Meteorological Agency at a press conference on Friday afternoon warned of possible landslides, floods and storm winds, as Typhoon No. 12 was approaching the Japanese archipelago.
The agency called on residents in areas expected to be hit by the typhoon to evacuate swiftly if evacuation orders are issued by local governments.
The agency is predicting that the powerful typhoon will approach the Kanto-Koshin region, including Tokyo, on Saturday afternoon and land on the Tokai region or western Japan before dawn on Sunday.
The Sumida River Fireworks Festival, which was scheduled for Saturday in Tokyo's Taito and Sumida wards, has been postponed until Sunday. However, if it is stormy on Sunday, the event will be canceled. Weather permitting, this year will be the 41st time the annual fireworks display has been held. Last year the event attracted 750,000 people.
