Tyneside travel show to tell holidaymakers it's business as usual despite coronavirus

Travel companies are to attend a show in Whitley Bay this Thursday where they no doubt will face lots of questions from those planning a holiday amid the escalating coronavirus outbreak.

The Holiday Show, which had been organised before rising concerns over the virus, will take place at the Spanish City where a range of holiday companies and operators will be on hand for visitors to speak to.

Among them will be Jet2holidays, as well as Wendy Wu Tours whose specialist areas include China where the coronavirus started.

John Dixon - who runs independent travel agent shop Destinations By George in Monkseaton and also helps organise the show - said on Wednesday that their current message is 'business as usual".

There will be plenty information on hand and the staff from the companies, which will be setting up for the show upstairs in the St Mary's Lighthouse Suite at 3pm in readiness for visitors from 4.30pm, will be able to discuss any concerns and give information, advice and, if necessary, reassurance.

While the situation is in a state of flux and advice may change, the plan is to tell visitors that it is business as usual unless the Foreign Office decides that people cannot travel to certain destinations.

Despite general concerns over the virus, John said his business has not seen any downward trend but had enjoyed its best year ever, with bookings being taken just this week for the Far East and Mediterranean.

Thursday's event in Whitley Bay , which is free entry, will run until 7.30pm and also among those taking part will be Emirates Holidays; Riviera Travel, Silversea, Scenic, Saga and Celebrity Cruises.

There is advice and guidance on the Government website.
