Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade warning over drinking and swimming after two end up in hospital

Two men have ended up in hospital after getting into difficulty in the sea after drinking.

The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade have now urged people to avoid entering water after having alcohol following the incident near Spanish City in Whitley Bay.

A spokesperson said: "It is believed that both men had been drinking alcohol before entering the water and the brigade wishes to reiterate the message of not attempting to go into the sea/river if you have been drinking."

On Sunday afternoon, the Coastguard called the brigade after receiving multiple 999 calls reporting a man in difficulty in the sea at the south end of Whitley Bay beach.

A second man, who was friends with the first casualty, had attempted to reach him in the sea and also fell in.

RNLI Lifeguards based at the beach reached the casualty and got him to the Inshore Lifeboat from Cullercoats RNLI.

Emergency services including Blyth Coastguard, RNLI, North East Ambulance Service and Northumbria Police were on shore to assist.

Medical care was also provided by a number of off-duty NHS staff who came forward to help.

Both men were taken to hospital but their current conditions are not known but one man was unconscious after being pulled from the water.
